How An Education Major Can Help You Follow Your Dreams Of Becoming A Teacher

From the time were you were a child, was your favorite activity playing school? You loved it when you had the role of teacher in your classroom and could be in front of your class; an education major is what you see for yourself. Do you love things in an organized manner and enjoy sharing information with others and watching them take it in? It sounds like being a teacher is what you are made for and that education major is the beginning of the path to your dreams.

Different Types of Education Majors:

Not everyone in education simply studies education. Depending on the age of the students you want to teach, the type of school you want to be in and the subject matter you wish to focus in, there are different types of degrees in education.

For the teacher who wants to focus in elementary school with the general population, an early childhood major would be appropriate. There are also majors focusing in gifted education or different branches of special education. Either of these can be done in combination with early education to broaden the range of students you can teach.

There are also subject matter concentrations. If you love math and cannot wait to share that love, a math education major would be for you. If language and/or English is more up your alley, than a focus in this area would be for you. This typically goes with the education major for someone who wishes to teach in middle or high school.

A special education focus will allow you to teach in most any grade from kindergarten through twelfth grade. There are now collaborative teaching models where special education teachers work closely with classroom/content teachers to provide the best models for every student. By combining a content area with a special education focus, your education degree will be even more desirable.

What to do with your Education Major:

Once you have your degree with an education major, no matter the focus, it is time to find a job! Whether you are looking at public or private schools, you need to also become certified in the state and in the content or age range you majored in (English, Early Childhood, Gifted, Science...). Sometimes people choose to add on classes to have more than one area where they can teach, and this can be done either before or after graduation.

Remember, a certification and an education major do not create an instant good teacher. Teachers need that love of teaching and the ability to reach many types of students. Clearly, it is a career from the heart. Though teachers do not make bad salaries, they are certainly not in the higher paid categories. The job outlook is always good for teachers, especially in the areas of math, science and special education.

By working hard in your classes, completing your degree and certification, you are on the road to making your dreams of having your own classroom a reality. With an education major, it is all possible.
